SurgiVet Pericardiocentesis Catheter Set. This catheter set is used to drain fluid from the pericardial sac. The Seldinger technique offers a greater level of safety than direct needle puncture. With the animal in lateral recumbency, the needle is introduced through the fourth intercostal space and should be advanced slowly towards the heart. Resistance will be felt from the pericardium, then a sudden release as it is penetrated. If the needle touches the myocardium, premature ventricular contractions will be seen on an ECG monitor. Once in place, thread the wire guide through the needle into the pericardial sac and remove the needle. The dilator can be used to open up a tract through the skin if necessary. The catheter pigtail is then unrolled over the thumb and threaded onto the wire guide and down into the pericardial sac. When the wire guide is removed, the pigtail configuration retains the catheter tip within the sac. FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer). Sterile. Set includes 8.2Fr, 20cm long catheter with six distal holes, an 18g, 7cm long introduction needle and a 0.038″ diameter, 60cm long wire guide. PCS911.
